The 6th District stretches from Duval County into the north part of Lake County. It is comprised of all or parts of eight counties: Alachua, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Gilchrist, Lake, Levy and Marion.
About half of the roughly 670,000 residents live in or around the cities of Gainesville, Ocala, and The Villages to Leesburg. Another third live in the northern part of the district in Jacksonville and Clay County.
Predominantly rural, the district is home to many retirees who have re-located here from other parts of the country. Agriculture, education, forestry, tourism, health care and defense are major industries. One of the top research universities in the United States, the University of Florida, is located in Gainesville.
There are over 480,000 registered voters in the 6th District, almost evenly balanced politically, with 42.7% Republican, 38.9% Democrat, and 18.3% Independent and other minor parties.
