FLORIDA TIMES-UNION AND ORLANDO SENTINEL BOTH REAFFIRM SUPPORT FOR STEARNS IN PRIMARY ELECTION
EACH CITE STEARNS' FISCAL RESPONSIBLITY AND CONSERVATIVE LEADERSHIP
OCALA – AUGUST 22, 2010 – The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville expresses its support for Rep. Cliff Stearns in the Republican primary for the Sixth Congressional District. Also, the Orlando Sentinel today again announced its endorsement of Stearns in the primary election, “ Our Endorsement: U.S. Representative District Six – Stearns in the 6th.”
The Times-Union cites his strong record of fiscal responsibility as well as his leadership in working on behalf of consumers. The Times-Union states, “Cliff Stearns has been a fiscal conservative for a long time. He has walked the walk, voting against his own party at times, such as on farm subsidies. Now, more than ever, the nation needs thoughtful representatives like him to steer the nation out of its great debt.”
The Times-Union continues, “Stearns, by virtue of his seniority, also has a good chance to take some leadership positions if the Republicans win the House in November. He has built a background on consumer issues. Thus, he is our pick over another of many newcomers to politics in this election season…if voters are looking for effectiveness while being true to conservative principles, then Stearns is the choice.”
In its endorsement of Stearns, the Orlando Sentinel stated, ““An expert on veterans and telecommunications policy, Mr. Stearns continues to attack the running up of the federal debt and Congress’ profligate spending.” The Orlando Sentinel also noted that Stearns “appears much more capable of representing the interests of this heavily conservative district.”
”I deeply appreciate this recognition of my long-time efforts to control government spending and to reduce the national debt,” said Stearns. “I look forward to continuing to provide conservative leadership in Congress.”

PRESS RELEASE
“STEARNS EARNS TRUST” – SAYS FLORIDA TIMES-UNION ENDORSEMENT
NEWSPAPER STATES – “RELIABLE ADVOCATE OF LOW TAXES, LOW DEFICITS, AND LESS FEDERAL INVOLVEMENT”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact, Matt McKinney, 352-236-2455
OCALA, AUGUST 14, 2010 – The Florida Times-Union, the largest newspaper in northeast Florida, has endorsed Republican Congressman Cliff Stearns for Florida’s Sixth Congressional District. The editorial states, “With Stearns, the voters know exactly what they’re getting – a reliable advocate of low taxes, low deficits, less spending and less federal involvement in their daily lives. He has even voted against his party leadership at times, opposing No Child Left Behind and farm subsidies. That’s why he is praised by such conservative groups as the National Taxpayers Union, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Citizens Against Government Waste.”
The endorsement also notes Stearns independence, “Stearns sometimes ruffles the feathers of his colleagues; he’s sponsoring a bill that would tie congressional pay raises to balanced budgets, for example. It’s too bad that more members aren’t willing to sacrifice their personal interests for the public’s good. And while a majority in Congress throw money around, hoping to spark an economic recovery, Stearns proposes tweaks that actually would help – freeing up some interest income from taxes, for example.”
In endorsing Stearns, the Times-Union highlights Stearns Committee work for veterans and on telecommunications: “Stearns is on the Veterans Affairs Committee – and this area needs a strong voice on that panel. He has been an outspoken advocate for more attention given to Army suicides. He also is minority leader of the Communications, Technology and the Internet Subcommittee. If Republicans win the House, he likely would be chairman – a good thing because a free-market advocate is needed to fight new federal controls in the Internet.”
“I appreciate the support of the Florida Times-Union and this recognition of my record for fighting higher spending, rising deficits, and more federal intrusion in our lives,” said Stearns. “I look forward to continuing to work for my fellow veterans and restoring the free market principles that have served our nation so well.”

OCALA, AUGUST 7, 2010 – The Orlando Sentinel has endorsed the re-election of Congressman Cliff Stearns to represent the Sixth District of Florida. Stearns Earns an A for English
WASHINGTON, MAY 8, 2008 - Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala) today was honored with the "A in English" Award by U.S. English for his efforts to promote English as the unifying language of the United States. "Today we are honoring those members of Congress who understand that the common bond of the English language allows us to get the most from our diverse nation," said Mauro Mujica, Chairman of U.S. English since 1993. Born in Chile, Mujica immigrated to the United States and learned firsthand the obstacles facing non-English speakers. A naturalized citizen, Mujica holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Architecture from Columbia University. He is fluent in Spanish, English, and French, has a working knowledge of German and Italian, and is now studying Russian. Mujica is an international architect with a career spanning 28 years, his biography can be found in Who's Who of the World.
"The Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution are written in English, the language of our government," explained Stearns. "Reading, writing, and speaking English are essential to succeeding in our society. Those who fail to learn English isolate themselves educationally, economically, and culturally, separating themselves from fully enjoying the freedoms we have. By promoting English, we are promoting full participation in the American experience."
U.S. English rated members using their position on five issues critical to promoting the English language. Two of these key issues were amendments offered by Stearns in 2007, protecting employees who institute English-in-the workplace policies from lawsuits, and preventing the IRS from using Spanish on its website.
U.S. English, Inc. is the nation's oldest and largest non-partisan citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. Founded in 1983 by the late Sen. S.I. Hayakawa of California, U.S. English, Inc., (www.usenglish.org) now has more than 1.8 million members.
